More than 5,000 people enjoyed two of Esperance's biggest and most anticipated school holiday events in July, with Neon Showdown and Winter Wonderland once again delivering plenty of fun, connection and memorable experiences for local families.
Designed in response to ideas and feedback from local young people, Neon Showdown returned to the Esperance Indoor Stadium early in the month, attracting an impressive 1,000 attendees across four big sessions. The event included a full canteen fundraiser run by the Esperance Netball Association and featured virtual reality games, laser tag, archery tag, an obstacle course, bungee run, silent disco, giant games, face painting and more, giving young people a safe and exciting space to get active, connect with friends and try something new.
Attendance included 450 people at the primary school session, 80 at the high school session and 470 at the open community session - following this success, planning is already underway for Neon Showdown 2027.
Just two weeks later, the Civic Centre precinct was transformed into a Winter Wonderland, with an estimated 4,000 people of all ages enjoying a rare snow experience in the heart of Esperance.
Winter Wonderland featured 10 tonnes of locally supplied ice, used to create a snow pit, double snow slide, snowball throwing zone and regular snowstorms throughout the day. Visitors also enjoyed arcade games, virtual reality experiences, inflatables, arts and crafts, live local music, 40 market stalls and 15 food vendors.
The event provided a welcome boost for businesses across the region, with local suppliers helping deliver key event infrastructure including the ice, scaffold slide and inflatables, while stallholders, food vendors and community groups contributed to the vibrant atmosphere.
Neither event would be possible without the support of the community. More than 20 volunteers generously gave their time to Winter Wonderland, while staff from across numerous Shire departments worked behind the scenes to bring both events to life.
Feedback from Attendees highlighted the impact the events have on the community, with wonderful comments such as " Great time for the kids and lots to do”, “I had the best time! Love Winter Wonderland!", and "What a wonderful family-friendly event run by the Shire. Please keep continuing to run these events!". One attendee shared a particularly heartfelt reflection: "Winter Wonderland wasn't just an event, it was a reminder of the true meaning of community. As someone who left my home country to build a new life in Australia, moments like these make us feel seen, welcomed and that we truly belong."
The success of both events reflects the ongoing commitment of the Shire's Community Development team to create unique experiences bringing people together, encouraging participation and help make Esperance an even more connected and vibrant place to live.
