Recruitment Process
Who can work for the Shire?
We employ applicants with legal rights to work in Australia, including:
- Australian and/or New Zealand citizens
- permanent residents
- temporary residents with permission to work.
As part of the recruitment process, we will confirm your eligibility to legally work in Australia and you may be asked to supply original documents pertaining to this (Australian Birth or Citizenship certificate, Australian or New Zealand Passport, Passport from another country if you hold an Australian Visa or evidence of resident status).
Completing Your Application
All applications must be submitted online via the Shire of Esperance Jobs Board. To be considered for an interview, your application should include the following:
- Cover letter
- Resume
- Statement addressing the Selection Criteria listed on the Position Description (if requested)
- Copies of any licenses or qualifications that you hold
- Details of at least two referees
Applications must be submitted by no later than 5pm on the closing date. If applying for more than one position separate applications must be submitted for each position.
Applicants are Shortlisted
After the closing date, applicants will be reviewed and shortlisted based on the essential and desirable criteria listed on the position description. Applicants who have been shortlisted will be contacted and invited to attend an interview.
Interview Guidelines / Conducting Interviews
Interviews will be conducted by a panel of usually 3 people, one representative from Human Resources and two representatives from the department the role is positioned. Applicants will be asked the same set of questions and are encouraged and will be provided a time to ask their own questions to the panel. The panel will take notes during each interview to assist them in making a final decision.

Referee Checks
The name and contact number must be provided for at least two referees on your application. Applicant’s referees will be contacted for a reference check.
Pre-employment check
Before an applicant can commence work with the Shire of Esperance they must undergo a pre-employment check:
Medical Assessments
You will be required to complete a pre-employment medical including independent medical assessment, functional capacity assessment and laboratory drug and alcohol test to determine the applicants’ suitability to carry out the physical requirements of the position.
National Police Clearance
You will be asked to provide a National Police Clearance no more than six months old. Other certificates may also be requires for specific roles (e.g.: Working With Children’s Check, First Aid Certificates etc.).
Qualifications/Licences
You will be required to provide academic qualifications, licences (including drivers, high risk etc) and any other documents relevant to the position. We may verify qualifications and/or licences via external verification providers prior to and during your employment with us.
Eligibility to Work
We will conduct a Visa Entitlement Verification through the Department of Home Affairs prior to and at regular intervals during employment to confirm eligibility to work.
Offer of Employment & Commencement
Welcome! The successful applicant will be provided with an Offer of Employment and a commencement date will be organised. The first day will include a range of inductions specific to the role and the worksite, and then the successful applicant will commence work in their new role.
