History

Esperance Home Care was founded in 1988, thanks to the dedication of community members.

In 1987, a funding request was made for a local nursing home, but the government required the establishment of community-based home care services first. Mrs Alva Courtis, a local health advocate, attended a seminar in Kalgoorlie to learn more about these services.

To assess the need, a survey was conducted across the South East Region, including Ravensthorpe, Hopetoun, and Norseman, focusing on residents over 70. Despite low numbers, a meeting in August 1988 led to the formation of the Esperance Home and Community Care Advisory Committee Council, with the Esperance Council providing financial management support.

The service began with a $51,000 budget, a Coordinator, part-time office assistant, and housekeeper, offering various services like housekeeping, shopping, social support, gardening, and transport. Initially based at Sports House on James Street, it later moved to Lotteries House and finally to its current location on Black Street.

The Black Street premise has seen several expansions: in 2006 and 2008 for the Admiration section, in 2012 for the Meals on Wheels kitchen, and in 2024, the Day Centre was remodelled and extended.

As of July 2024, Esperance Home Care employs around 50 staff and supports over 400 residents at any time.
