As part of celebrations marking the Esperance Museum's 50th Anniversary, community members are being invited to contribute their unique experiences to the local history record through the You've Got Mail: Esperance 2076 initiative.
The project encourages people of all ages to write a letter about life in Esperance today, share memories from decades past, or reflect on the people, places and experiences that matter most to them. The letters will be carefully preserved in the Museum's local history collection and remain unopened until 2076, creating a remarkable community record for future generations.
You've Got Mail: Esperance 2076 recognises that local history and identity is shaped by major events - and also by everyday stories of family, work, school, sport and community. What may seem ordinary today will become a valuable insight into life in Esperance 50 years from now. Think about how different life was in the 1970s – that’s what it’s going to feel like for the people opening these letters in 2076, as personalities reach forward to paint a vivid, immediate picture of our time.
Taking part is simple - collect an Esperance 2076 envelope from the Museum, write your letter, and take it back to the Museum to post in the dedicated letterbox.
The letter-writing project forms part of a broader program celebrating the Museum's 50 years, including the collection of 50 Voices for 50 Years and a special anniversary weekend planned for 9 to 11 October. Keep an eye on Museum and Shire communication channels to stay up to date!
