Pet Sterilisation Program 2026 Now Open

The Shire of Esperance is pleased to let the community know that the 2026 Pet Sterilisation Program is now open. This program is designed to make pet care more affordable for people within the shire who may be finding costs hard to manage. Thanks to support from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and our partnership with Swans Veterinary Services, eligible residents can have their cat or dog sterilised for free.

Many people have told us that the cost of vet care is getting harder to manage. Our Rangers have noticed this too. This program is here to help you meet the legal requirements for pet care, including sterilisation, microchipping and registration.

How the Pet Sterilisation Program Works

1. Apply through the Shire

Fill out the Pet Sterilisation Program form and send it to rangers@esperance.wa.gov.au. Please include your concession card to show you’re eligible.
You can also pick up a form at the Shire Administration Office, 77 Windich Street, Esperance.

2. We assess your application

A Shire officer will check your application and let you know if it is approved.

3. Receive a voucher

If approved, you will get a voucher for the sterilisation. It is valid for 30 days.

4. Book your vet appointment

Call Swans Veterinary Services on (08) 9071 5777 to book your pet in. If your pet is not microchipped, the vet will do this at the same time for $44 (you will have to pay for this).

5. Register your pet

Once sterilisation is complete, please fill out a Pet Registration Form so your pet is fully registered with the Shire.

Within 30 days of applying, your pet must be:

  • Microchipped
  • Sterilised
  • Registered with the Shire

Being registered helps make sure your pet can be returned to you quickly if it ever gets lost.

You can apply if you hold a

  • Health Care Card,
  • Senior’s Card,
  • Veteran Concession Card, or if
  • you can show proof of low income.

Each household can include up to two pets. Funding is limited, so the program may close once the budget is fully used.

If you’d like to apply or have any questions, please call the Shire on (08) 9071 0666, email rangers@esperance.wa.gov.au, or visit the Shire Administration Building at 77 Windich Street.
