Garage Sale Trail: Local Ideas Matter

As the Shire marks 10 years of supporting the national Garage Sale Trail campaign, the community is preparing to take part in the event one final time. Over the years, this much-loved initiative has helped millions of people buy, sell and reuse pre-loved items, reducing waste while bringing communities together.

Running over two weekends, 7-8 and 14-15 November, the 2026 Garage Sale Trail will bring an incredible journey, starting 16 years ago with a simple idea and the support of local government, to a close.

Back in 2010, Sydney friends Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder launched a community event called Sizzle. Backed with funding from their local government, Waverley Council, the event encouraged people to sell unwanted household items rather than send them to landfill.

What started as a small local initiative quickly showed its potential. With continued local government support and strong community interest, the concept evolved into the Garage Sale Trail, and expanded beyond a single council area. Before long, local governments across Australia had embraced the idea, helping transform it into a nationwide movement supported by more than 120 local and state government partners.

Darryl and Andrew’s story is a powerful example of how local government can help turn innovative community ideas into something much bigger. A relatively small investment, combined with community enthusiasm and strong partnerships, created a movement that has delivered environmental, social and economic benefits across the country.

Over the past 16 years, more than four million Australians have taken part, giving over 7.2 million pre-loved items a second life and generating an impressive $52 million-plus for households, charities and community groups. Just as importantly, the Garage Sale Trail has helped create countless conversations, friendships and neighbourhood connections through front-yard sales and community gatherings.

As the final Garage Sale Trail approaches, the Esperance community has the chance to be part of the last chapter of this uniquely Australian success story. Whether you're clearing out the shed, hunting for a bargain, or simply enjoying a chat with neighbours, the Garage Sale Trail is an opportunity to reduce waste, support your community and celebrate an idea that shows just how far local initiatives can go.
