The July school holidays are almost here, and the Shire of Esperance's Community Development team is once again transforming winter into a season of fun, connection and unforgettable experiences for all.
What began as ambitious ideas to create exciting opportunities for young people in a regional community have grown into two of Esperance's most anticipated school holiday events - Neon Showdown and Winter Wonderland.
Now in its second year, Neon Showdown returns to the Esperance Indoor Stadium on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 July, bringing two action-packed days designed through feedback from local young people.
Bursting with colour, energy and adventure, this free event will feature laser tag, archery tag, an obstacle course, bungee run, silent disco, giant games, face painting and a dedicated chill-out zone. The program encourages young people to get active, connect with friends and try something new in a safe and welcoming environment.
Neon Showdown continues to grow in popularity, with more than 700 participants attending in 2025, when friendly competition from local police officers helped create a fun and inclusive atmosphere. This year, organisers are taking that inclusiveness one step further with a dedicated session inviting adults to join in the action.
Just two weeks later, Esperance will prepare for something even more extraordinary - a guaranteed snow day.
On Saturday 18 July, Winter Wonderland returns to the Civic Centre precinct for its fourth year, once again delivering a winter experience rarely seen in Western Australia. While the long-range forecast might be uncertain, the Shire confidently guarantees one thing: 100% chance of snow.
Families are invited to rug up in their warmest gear and enjoy a day filled with snowy fun, featuring a free outdoor snow pit, snow slides and regular snow storms. The festivities extend beyond the snow, with glitter tattoos, inflatables and mud monsters adding more excitement throughout the day. Outside, visitors can explore a pop-up food court and market stalls, while inside the Civic Centre, a large community market will showcase handcrafted local goods and a dedicated games arcade and virtual reality snow experiences will provide more entertainment for the young - and the young at heart.
You can also experience the winter magic early - there's still time to enter the Build a Snowman Competition! Individuals, businesses and schools are invited to get creative with recycled and reusable materials – just build a snowman with the date ‘18 July’ clearly featured on it, then display your snowman in a prominent location such as your front garden, schoolyard or window display. Make sure your snowman is transportable so it can be brought to the Winter Wonderland event for judging. Categories for individual entrants offer the chance to win a $200 gift voucher from a local business of your choice, while participating businesses can compete for prizes including Civic Centre show tickets, promotional exposure and recognition for their displays, and school entries can win a community experience delivered by the Community Development Team. Voting opened on 1 July 2026, and all entrants must register through the Shire website by 10 July 2026 to be in the running for these fantastic prizes.
The Neon Showdown and Winter Wonderland events represent far more than school holiday entertainment. They reflect the creativity, dedication and community focus of the Shire's Community Development team, who have worked to create unique, free experiences that would not otherwise be available in our regional town. By listening to local young people and thinking creatively about what is possible, the team has built two signature events bringing families together, encouraging participation and creating lasting memories.
