Passers-by will notice activity around the Goods Shed, home of the Esperance Museum, over the coming weeks as early works get underway. These works are the first step in an important project to preserve the 129-year-old building and protect a significant part of Esperance's heritage.
The project will begin with the installation of site fencing and the relocation of the Museum's historic cranes. These familiar features need to be moved to make room for restoration works and provide safe access for structural repairs.
Once the cranes have been relocated, the Shire will work with ARC Infrastructure to install sections of railway line within the precinct. This will allow the historic locomotive to be carefully moved out of the Goods Shed so structural work can take place inside.
These preparations mark the beginning of an important investment in one of Esperance's significant heritage assets.
Recent engineering inspections identified areas of structural deterioration within the Goods Shed that require attention. The project will include repairs to structural timber elements, roofing and drainage systems, helping to strengthen the building and address the impacts of age, weather and time.
Ongoing testing for potential contaminants is also part of the project.
While much of the work will take place behind the scenes, it is a critical step in preserving the Goods Shed and ensuring it remains an important part of Esperance's story for years to come.
The Museum remains closed during this time.
This project will help protect not only the Goods Shed, but also the stories, artefacts and memories that tell Esperance's history and reflect the people who have shaped our region.
