If you’ve arrived in Esperance without a booking and found every caravan park and coastal campground full, the Esperance Overflow Campground is your last-resort option. It’s not a destination park, it’s an interim stopover until you can secure a spot at a caravan park. This practical, short-term stay is for those who didn’t plan ahead but still need a safe place to camp while enjoying the region.
The Overflow Campground is located at the Greater Sports Ground, with entry via Black Street. It’s not a luxury destination, but it’s a safe, convenient option when you’re in a pinch.
This year, the campground will open on 17 December. You can’t book ahead. It’s strictly first-come, first-served. So, if you’re planning a trip during peak season (December to May), keep this in mind.
What to Expect
Camping outside a dedicated camping ground or caravan park in Esperance is illegal. Patrols are undertaken, and fines apply.
- Unpowered sites only.
- Basic amenities: toilets, limited showers, and a campers’ kitchen for washing dishes.
- Kitchen hours: 5:30am – 9am, 11:30am – 2pm, and 5:30pm – 9pm.
- Check-in: 2 pm–7 pm at the site van (Eftpos only).
How Much Does It Cost?
The Shire of Esperance is not in competition with private business, so prices are reasonable but not to undercut local operators.
- $40 per night per site (up to two people).
- $10 per extra person.
Camp Rules You Need to Know
- Maximum stay: 4 nights.
- No fires anywhere on-site.
- Generators are allowed only between 8am – 12pm and 4pm – 8pm.
- Dogs welcome on a leash, but please clean up after them.
- There is Zero Tolerance for abusive language and aggressive behaviour; breaches will result in immediate eviction.
When Esperance is buzzing, and every caravan park is booked, this campground ensures you still have a spot to rest. It’s not fancy, but it’s safe and close to town.
Pro Tip: Bring your own cooking gear and supplies; this is a basic setup designed for short stays.
For our community:
- The oval will remain open for walking dogs. Please slow down, keep dogs on a leash when not exercising, and be considerate of visitors so everyone feels welcome.
- Expect increased traffic activity between 2pm and 7pm during check-in times. Please take extra care when driving near the Sports Ground.
The Esperance Overflow Campground is your backup plan for peak season. Enjoy the simplicity and make the most of your Esperance adventure!
