At the Bay of Isles Leisure Centre a growing number of adults are diving into swimming lessons - and the results are making waves!
What began as a response to Leisure Centre staff observing non-swimming parents with their children at swimming lessons has evolved into a thriving timetable, helping adults of all ages and backgrounds build essential water safety skills and confidence.
Lessons are currently scheduled during school terms, with two Adult Swimming Lessons held per week. These adult lessons have seen steady participation; there were 19 attendees last term and 10 this winter term, despite the seasonal slowdown. The lessons are open to anyone wanting to learn to swim or to improve their swimming, and instructors are passionate about making swimming accessible and enjoyable for all – as evidenced by their booming general attendance rates. Already this year the Leisure Centre Swim School has attracted 1,583 students, with record enrolments in terms 1 and 2. This is a hard earned and well deserved vote of confidence from our community on the thoughtful and reliable Leisure Centre team.
Learning to swim as an adult is no easy task; with a lifetime of non-swimming habits to overcome, many beginners feel stiff in the water and unsure how to float. The friendly instructors meet each participant where they’re at, gently guiding them through the basics and tailoring lessons to each person’s swimming goals. Whether it’s helping their children stay safe in water, swimming laps, or preparing for scuba diving, every goal is celebrated.
The atmosphere in these classes is one of encouragement and fun – feedback from some attendees has been that “it’s the best time of the week” for them! For many it’s a rare moment of personal time, and they make the most of it. Laughter is common, and the sense of achievement is palpable. Instructors say it’s incredibly rewarding to watch someone progress from not being able to float, to confidently swimming laps.
This program is more than just lessons - it’s a reflection of the Leisure Centre’s commitment to community wellbeing. Staff are flexible with scheduling and often adapt classes and timetables to make sure everyone gets a chance to join in.
Coastal life means we can go to the beach any time we like! The Leisure Centre is proud to support everyone in the community to build the skills needed to feel confident and safe in the water - an everyday part of living in Esperance.
