Vandalism Delays Road Safety Upgrades

Roadworks to improve safety along Fisheries Road have been underway for several years, with the latest stage focusing on upgrading the intersection at Fisheries Road and Goldfields Road to improve visibility and traffic flow.

Unfortunately, recent vandalism at the site has caused serious setbacks and additional costs to the project. Last month, someone drove recklessly around the lighting tower used to illuminate the intersection overnight, damaging the newly laid road surface. Last week further damage was inflicted at the worksite and more than 30 traffic cones were destroyed.

These actions have real consequences. The damaged road required additional traffic control, specialised equipment to clear loose stone, and repairs to the subbase before the surface could be resealed. Replacing the destroyed cones adds further cost - an unnecessary burden that ultimately falls on the community.

This behaviour is not only dangerous and irresponsible, but it also undermines the hard work being done to improve road safety. The estimated cost to the Shire is around $15,000, covering labour, materials, equipment, traffic control, and replacement cones. More importantly, it delays completion of the project, extending disruption for residents who have already shown great patience.

Security cameras will be installed at the site, and details have been passed to Esperance Police. We urge everyone to report vandalism and help prevent further damage.

The Shire of Esperance thanks the community for its continued support and remains committed to completing the intersection upgrade as quickly and safely as possible.
