The latest round of our regular sand renourishment campaign along Castletown Quays has been successfully completed! Achieving this during the two challenging 1-in-25-year storm events of recent months was a real feat, with Shire staff and contractors working on the project to be heartily congratulated.
This year’s campaign marks a significant milestone - it’s the first time the renourishment has been carried out using buried pipes. A trial was conducted in 2021 using above ground pipes, during the dredging that Department of Transport (DoT) carries out at Bandy Creek Harbour every two years. Thanks to funding from the CoastWA Hotspot Coastal Adaptation and Protection Major Project Fund, we now have a more permanent solution in place. The buried pipes will remain in place, while the pumps will only be on site during each renourishment cycle when DoT are in the Harbour for their dredging. The above ground pump connection points will be protected by box structures when not in use.
The approximately 50,000 cubic metres of sand pumped from Bandy Creek Harbour to replenish the foreshore at Castletown Beach means the volume of sand on the beach is now better placed to buffer against future weather events. Equipment has been removed from the Castletown foreshore, with the lay-down yard opposite the Cannery to remain fenced off for the time being.
Council and the Shire are proud to collaborate with DoT to safeguard both public and private infrastructure along our coastline. By making efficient use of sand from the Department’s dredging program, we’re ensuring a resilient and sustainable foreshore for our community.
