Road & Project Update

The Shire's asphalt contractors are in the region, working on annual road and pathway construction and maintenance projects. Approximately 1,040 Tonnes of asphalt will be used to complete all these works; using the asphalting crew to complete batches of projects in this way streamlines the asphalting program and saves the Shire (and ratepayers!) money and time.

We’re always happy to answer reasonable questions – keep them coming to shire@esperance.wa.gov.au! Here’s some info on the St Germain Traffic Calming Works -
The traffic calming design was chosen after residents along St Germain Ave presented a petition requesting Council take action to reduce speeding along the road. A number of options were looked at in consultation with the residents, and this design and location was the preferred option. The staggered intersections of Burton RD, St Germain Ave and Lyon Pde were not suitable for a roundabout design, and speed humps were not favoured because of the increase noise they cause. Contractor availability has impacted the timeframe to finish the roadwork, and Shire staff are working with contractors to complete the works as quickly as possible.

Onto current projects:

  • The Sand Backpass Pipeline Project will restart now that clearing permits have been approved for Stage 2.
  • Griggs Rd, SCADDAN - Reconstruction from Coolgardie-Esperance Hwy is underway.
  • Cascade Road Bridge, CASCADE – Roadwork either side of the bridge continues, with sealing starting in the coming weeks.
  • Myrup Road, MYRUP - 5km of reconstruction work continues, culvert and drainage upgrades, and widening of the road to 10m.
  • Drought Relief Tanks, GRASS PATCH - Earthworks completed, tanks to be installed soon.
  • Fisheries Road shoulder widening continues, with Phase 2 underway. This project is: sealing road shoulders where required, providing a wider and more forgiving road environment; installing Audio Tactile Line Markings to warn drivers when they are leaving the road; and providing center and edge line markings. Phase 2, from Ridgeland Road to the big Coolgardie-Esperance Hwy roundabout, has secured $5.5 million in funding, allowing the project footprint to expand. This major project is fully funded by the Regional Road Safety Program, a joint State and Federal Government initiative.
  • While the sun shines, drainage works will continue at various locations across the shire.

Upcoming Planned Projects:

  • Bukenerup Rd, MONJINGUP - Stearns Rd to Patterson Rd upgrade to 8.0 wide bitumen.
  • Merivale Road, MERIVALE - West of Stockyard Road to Tyrrell Road reconstruction.
  • Goldfields Road, CASTLETOWN – Goldfields Road and Fisheries Road intersection.
  • West Rd, SALMON GUMS - Resheet.
  • Backman Rd, NERIDUP - Resheet.

Completed Projects:

  • Telegraph Rd, MONJINGUP – Work on drainage to prevent erosion issues during winter rains.
  • Oldfield Rd, CASCADE - Work on drainage to prevent erosion issues during winter rains.
