Planned Prescribed Burns

The Shire of Esperance is in its third year of implementing the Bushfire Risk Management Plan. There are many ways to mitigate bushfire risk, such as hazard reduction (prescribed) burns, mechanical and chemical works. In the coming weeks, the Shire of Esperance will undertake prescribed burns in the following areas once conditions permit;

  • Borefields (Cell 1),
  • Toowacka Campsite,
  • Stearnes Road,
  • Skrollys Park; and
  • Coomalbidgup.

Under the right conditions, prescribed burns help reduce fuel load, bushfire intensity, and serve to renew native bushland.

Residents living in the area will receive additional information closer to the time of the burns.

The Shire of Esperance successfully received $353,000 from the State Government Mitigation Activity Fund, allowing the Shire to engage contractors and volunteers to implement the Shire's Bushfire Risk Management Plan.

Prescribed burns aren’t the only way to mitigate bushfires. Our Bushfire Risk Mitigation Coordinator has been working to assess Shire reserves and land to see which lots need slashing or mulching of fire-breaks, and works closely with contractors to action these tasks, making sure that the best outcome is achieved.

The Shire website and Facebook page will publish information on confirmed prescribed burn dates and the slashing/mulching program.
