The Shire of Esperance warmly invites all interested individuals and organisations to participate in a series of upcoming consultations as part of the review of the Public Health Plan (PHP).
The Kids in Esperance survey is now open, and our younger generation are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas. To stay informed and participate in upcoming consultation opportunities, visit the Shire’s Public Health Plan 2021 – 2026 Review webpage and click the ‘follow’ button near the top of the page.
The PHP is a guiding document which aligns with the Council Plan, shows a benchmark snapshot of the health of people in Esperance, and identifies the ongoing health needs of our community. Developed in 2021 by our dedicated Environmental Health team - well in advance of legislative requirements - it positioned the Shire as a leader in regional public health planning and highlights Council’s consistently strong commitment to the health and wellbeing of Esperance residents.
This comprehensive review of the PHP will harness feedback to recognise and address any gaps and make sure the Plan continues to reflect the health needs, aspirations and priorities of our community. The upcoming consultations are designed to gather input from targeted demographics and stakeholders, including opportunities for youth and indigenous voices to be heard, as well as from the general regional population. The Shire is committed to ensuring the revised Plan is community-driven.
The existing Plan focuses on three key areas, and these are expected to carry through to the revised PHP with refinements informed by the upcoming feedback. These focus areas are:
- Healthy, active lifestyle opportunities for all - helping people make better choices for their physical and mental health by encouraging healthy habits and discouraging harmful ones
- A safe and protected community – advocating for programs and actions that help protect people from health risks in their surroundings and prevent illness
- An inclusive, resilient, and connected community – advocating for services and facilities that support people's wellbeing
The updated PHP will equip the Shire with valuable insights to support decision-making, budgeting and planning over the next five years and beyond. Importantly, it will also serve as a key resource for health agencies and local organisations, highlighting existing needs and deficiencies and helping them align their strategic planning and grant applications with regional health priorities.
Public health is more than just managing risks - it’s about creating the conditions for people to thrive. The Shire, with the help of the community, is set to deliver a strategic health document dealing with everything from infrastructure and environmental health to mental wellbeing and community resilience. Together, we can build a healthier, stronger Esperance.
