Smarter Service at Esperance Library

The Esperance Public Library has taken a big step forward in modernising its services with the installation of new RFID Smart Shelving, making returns easier, faster, and more accessible for everyone in the community.

Installed earlier this year, the Smart Shelving uses Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology - the same kind found in security fobs and NLIS cattle tags - to streamline the returns process. Located near the entrance where the old returns box used to be, the new system allows patrons to simply place their items upright in any cubicle. The shelf then automatically:

  • Scans and processes the return
  • Removes the item from the borrower’s account
  • Displays the returned item on the shelf screen

Returned items are instantly available for borrowing again, keeping the collection in constant circulation and eliminating wait times for both patrons and staff.

This upgrade is the result of Council investment, months of preparation by the Library team and volunteers, and support from the Shire’s IT and Building teams. Every item in the Esperance Library collection was individually tagged and prepared for the transition - a huge effort reflecting the dedication of everyone involved.

The shelving features multiple levels, making it easier for people with mobility or height restrictions to return items independently. This inclusive design ensures the Esperance Library remains a welcoming space for all members of the community.

Library staff have embraced the new system, noting how it has significantly streamlined internal processes and improved workplace safety by reducing manual handling. It’s a win-win for patrons and staff alike.

Importantly, the Smart Shelving also delivers on Council Plan Priority Project 15.1.2 - Review and implement initiatives to improve internal business efficiencies and service delivery (such as more online services and digital forms). By modernising how returns are handled, the Esperance Library is not only improving day-to-day operations but also laying the groundwork for future innovations - like the transition to the new Library, to be built in Stage 1a of the James Street Cultural Precinct.

This forward-thinking approach is part of a broader vision to enhance community services through smart technology and thoughtful design.

Please note:

  • Items must be placed vertically for scanning
  • Oversized items should be handed to staff
  • Shelves are available during staffed hours only
