The Shire of Esperance has received $946,938 from the Federal Community Energy Upgrades Fund – Round 2, enabling a major program of solar, battery, and energy efficiency upgrades across 16 Shire owned buildings.
Once complete, the $1.8 million program is expected to add over 580 kW of solar generation capacity and 460 kWh of battery storage to the Shire’s asset portfolio. These improvements are estimated to:
- Lower the Shire’s annual energy bills by over $280,000
- Reduce carbon emissions by more than 400 tonnes per year
- Provide an average energy saving of 59% across the upgraded facilities
- Strengthen the Shire’s climate resilience and reduce reliance on grid supplied power.
Together, these measures will make a substantial contribution to the Shire’s long-term sustainability goals and provide meaningful financial savings for the community.
These upgrades form part of the Shire’s ongoing commitment to reducing corporate carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and delivering long-term operational savings across community facilities.
With funding confirmed, the project is now moving into the delivery phase. Under the federal grant agreement, installation of solar panels, batteries and low-E window film is scheduled for completion by September 2026.
At the December Ordinary Council Meeting, Council approved a budget variation to ensure officers can begin the required procurement processes early in 2026.
Shire President and Elected Members welcomed the funding announcement, acknowledging the cost saving and energy reductions the project will bring to the Esperance community for many years to come
