Overflow Season Overview

With the 2025–26 Overflow Campground season wrapping up in April, we’d like to share how things went over the summer period.

This season saw almost 17,500 visitors stay at the facility - an increase of 18% on the previous year. While demand remained steady for much of this period, the sharp rise in fuel prices led to a noticeable drop in visitor numbers later in the period, particularly over Easter, which was down 62% compared to previous years.

Despite this, overall takings were still up 13%, with around 50% of revenue reinvested directly into operating the facility, including staffing, cleaning, waste management and equipment hire.

As the community knows, the Overflow Campground is a temporary solution designed to support peak demand, not an alternative to local caravan parks. Facilities are intentionally basic – with bathrooms and dishwashing amenities only, and no powered sites - and pricing is set to help cover operating costs rather than compete with commercial caravan park and camping providers. The aim is to encourage visitors to plan ahead, book early, and make use of established local camping businesses.

Over the summer period, illegal camping was monitored, with fines issued to those camping outside approved areas. It’s a timely reminder that there are no free camping area within the Shire of Esperance and visitors are encouraged to book camp sites or accommodation before coming to the area.

If you have friends or family who are planning to come to Esperance during the peak season, encourage them to secure their accommodation early, as spaces fill quickly.

Let’s continue looking out for one another and our community, welcoming visitors while respecting shared spaces, planning ahead, and helping keep Esperance a safe, connected and thriving place for everyone.
