New Jump Track Bringing Next Level Riding to Town

Construction of the new Lalor Bike Jump Track is progressing well, with works on schedule for asphalting in April. After the Shire completed initial earthworks, specialist trail builders Common Ground arrived on site and are now meticulously shaping the jumps and features of this exciting new facility.

Common Ground will construct the full layout, test ride it themselves, refine each section, and retest until the track performs exactly as intended. Their goal is to create a fun but more challenging freestyle experience for older kids, teenagers and adults who are ready to grow their riding skills – this will not be a track for beginner bike riders or small children!

This new jump track will add an important element to Esperance’s growing network of riding options. Several beginner-friendly bike and pump tracks are already available in the townsite, as well as the easy family circuit at the Piggery Mountain Bike Track 13km north of town.

The new jump track will give riders a convenient place to move to the next level, build confidence and learn new skills – then when they have time to head further out, the more advanced trails at Gibson and the Piggery are ready to explore!

Importantly, the project reflects key findings of the Shire of Esperance Mountain Bike Feasibility Study, which identified strong community demand for recreational cycling facilities close to town. With almost 20% of Western Australians identifying as bike riders and recreational cycling growing rapidly nationwide, the study highlighted the need for local facilities that support physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Community input through an online survey further confirmed preferences for trail types, facility styles, and desirable locations - information that has directly informed the design and development of the Lalor Bike Jump Track.

By providing purpose-built facilities, the Shire hopes the community will choose these safer, environmentally appropriate riding options rather than constructing informal jumps in bushland or at Dempster Head, where mountain biking is not permitted due to pedestrian safety and environmental impact.

Once Common Ground completes its fine‑tuning and the track is asphalted, landscaping works will follow. The track is expected to open in early May.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project nears completion!
