Making sure children get to and from school safely is something we all care about. Shire Rangers are working with local primary schools to make sure drop-off and pick-up times run smoothly and safely.
Here’s how you can help:
- Drive slowly: Keep your speed at 40km/h or less in School Zones during school hours.
- Follow the signs: Pay attention to all traffic and parking signs - they’re there to protect the kids and keep traffic moving.
- Park properly: Park on the road, next to the kerb, and facing the right way. Parking any other way is illegal.
- Don’t block footpaths: Parking on or across footpaths puts pedestrians, especially children, at risk.
- Avoid parking on verges: Even if the area looks empty, it’s not allowed.
- Don’t block driveways: This is just common courtesy. Blocking driveways causes problems for residents and can be dangerous.
- Stay clear of intersections: Leave at least 10 metres between your car and any intersection.
The State Government sets the overall rules for parking, but it's up to local governments to put them into action. Under the Local Government Act 1995 the Shire of Esperance must create and enforce parking laws - such as the Shire’s Parking Facilities Local Law.
This means Shire Rangers are responsible for making sure drivers follow parking signs and rules, especially in important areas like school zones. Their job is to keep things safe and orderly on the ground.
When you're in a school zone or picking up the kids, it's your responsibility to slow down, stay alert, and put safety first.
