Help Shape Mobile Trading Rules in Esperance

The Shire of Esperance is inviting local businesses, mobile traders and community members to have their say as part of a review of its Trading in Public Places and Local Government Property Policy. This Policy covers businesses which operate without a fixed address, most often from purpose-built vehicles such as mobile food trucks, health screening services, retail traders etc.

The Policy review is being undertaken to make sure mobile trading rules are clear and fair, and importantly, that they reflect how public spaces are being used across Esperance and the district. Feedback gathered through the consultation will help inform an updated, evidence‑based Policy.

Separate surveys have been developed for:

  • Local business owners in fixed premises (CBD and non‑CBD)
  • Mobile traders, including food, service and retail operators
  • Community members, including residents and visitors who use public spaces

Chief Executive Officer Shane Burge said community input was essential to the review process.

“Trading in public places plays an important role in the local economy and community life,” Shane said. “We want to hear directly from those affected by the policy to ensure future arrangements work well for businesses, traders and the wider community.”

The survey will take between five to ten minutes to complete, depending on how much additional information is volunteered. The questions are designed to capture demographic information, how often people choose to use mobile traders and why, what the perceived benefits and concerns are, and where our community would like to see these businesses operate from, among other topics. Many of the questions are multiple choice and can be answered quickly.

The consultation is open from 1 May to 31 May 2026. All surveys can be accessed via the Shire’s website.
