HAZARD REDUCTION ACTIVITY - TOOWACKA RESERVE

Attention Esperance residents and visitors: Volunteers and staff from DFES and the Shire of Esperance Bush Fire Brigades will be conducting hazard reduction burning activities in and around the Toowacka Reserve, west of the Esperance townsite.

PURPOSE: To reduce overall fuel loads to approximately 5-7 tonnes per hectare and establish a low-fuel buffer zone to mitigate the risk of running fires impacting the Pink Lake, Monjingup communities.

DATE: Between 17 May and 1 June 2025 (as weather permits)

BURN SIZE: 43.42 Ha

LOCATION: Area bounded by South Coast Hwy, Collier Road, Keenan Road

WHAT TO DO DURING AND AFTER HAZARD REDUCTION ACTIVITIES

  • Speed restrictions will be in place to ensure the safety of firefighters working in the area.
  • Motorists are asked to turn on their headlights when driving through the area.
  • Please follow all directions given by firefighters and emergency services personnel on site.
  • Smoke may impact visibility and air quality in and around the Pink Lake area on the day of the burn and in the days following. Residents and visitors with respiratory conditions are advised to keep their medications with them or nearby as a precaution.
  • For the safety of children, families are encouraged to supervise their whereabouts during the burn.
  • Firefighters will carry out periodic patrols of the area in the days following the burn.
  • Monitor the EmergencyWA website (www.emergency.wa.gov.au) for updates or changes.
