Local Laws are rules made by local governments that apply particularly within their district. They help keep the region running smoothly, establish and maintain the quality of life and standards expected by residents, businesses and property owners.
The Shire of Esperance Waste Local Law 2025 is designed to:
- Promote sustainability,
- Encourage people to reuse, recycle and compost to reduce waste going to landfill, and
- Make sure waste is disposed of in the most appropriate way.
This local law aims to provide better waste, recycling and resource recovery services for the community. It will help protect public health by reducing the risks from the dangerous disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste. It also encourages people in across the Shire to get involved in managing waste and to be environmentally responsible.
Local Laws work alongside WA State Law (Acts of Parliament) to deal with everyday issues in the Esperance community. They can be helpful in resolving disputes and supporting good governance.
The proposed Waste Local Law was presented to Council in March 2025. The public had a chance to give feedback between 4 April and 24 May 2025, but no public submissions were received.
However, the Shire did receive feedback from the Department of Local Government, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and the Minister for Environment. These responses are included in the council report, but none of them suggested any changes to the proposed local law.
The Waste Local Law and other local laws can be found on the Shire of Esperance Local Laws webpage.
