Did you know Esperance is home to Australia's only First Nations-led wildflower festival? With the Djilba Wildflower Festival returning from 19 to 23 September, preparations are well underway for this spectacular free community event.

Behind every table bursting with colourful, carefully identified and labelled wildflowers is a dedicated team working to bring the Djilba Wildflower Festival to life. The Shire of Esperance's Environmental Officers are proud to help showcase the remarkable beauty and diversity of our region's natural environment, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to discover and celebrate our region’s unique plant life. Working closely with Festival coordinators Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (ETNTAC), and event partners Esperance Wildflower Society, St Andrew's Anglican Parish and Esperance Community Arts, the team helps to deliver an event connecting people with nature, strengthening community partnerships and highlighting the environmental treasures of our region.

In the lead-up to the event, Shire botanists as well as trained volunteers carefully identify the hundreds of wildflower specimens that feature in the display. With many species closely related and difficult to distinguish, accurate identification often requires specialist knowledge and close examination – pass the magnifying glass!

The Environmental team assists with permits and approvals, coordinating licences, landowner permissions and access arrangements so volunteers can focus on what they do best: finding the absolute stars of the show. Drawing on their extensive knowledge of local flora, the team also helps source a range of wildflowers from across the district to ensure the display showcases the cream of what the Esperance region has to offer – see you at the Civic Centre in September!
