People from across the Esperance region came together today to celebrate the outstanding service of our 2026 Citizens of the Year, at the Rotary Club’s Australia Day in the Park. We also welcomed six new Australian Citizens, adding to an already special day.
The 12 nominations received across the Citizen of the Year Award categories highlight the significant number of community members who contribute their time and effort to improving life in Esperance. So many of the events and little extras we enjoy throughout the year happen because dedicated volunteers quietly step up and make them possible.
We congratulate the 2026 Citizens of the Year!
Community Citizen of the Year – Zen Frost
Zen has continued to provide food for people struggling throughout the community as well as donating pizzas and providing sponsorships to emergency services and community groups for years.
His selfless contribution has not gone unnoticed in our community, and we are lucky to have him as an idol in our town.
As homelessness rises in our town and more families struggle throughout our community, Zen constantly steps forward to help in any way he can. He provides food for anyone no matter their situation, race, religion ect. He always has a smile on his face and without any demeaning nature while he is doing it, making a little ray of sunshine when the clouds are getting darker. He shows what it means to be a part of a community not just someone pretending they are out to help.
Senior Citizen of the Year – Neil Livingstone
Neil has led the Esperance Firewood Cutters for 18 years, raising over $1 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service WA. Managing deliveries, finances, and volunteers, he fostered teamwork and dedication. Though retired from leadership, Neil continues to serve, exemplifying community spirit and lifelong commitment to supporting lifesaving services for the RFDS WA.
Neil has shown outstanding leadership through his long-term coordination of the Esperance Firewood Cutters, inspiring thirty volunteers to raise over $1 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. His strong organisation, teamwork, and dedication have strengthened community ties, enhanced local volunteer engagement, and contributed to a vital regional health service.
Active (Group) Citizen of the Year – Esperance Mother’s Day Classic
The Esperance Mother’s Day Classic Committee creates a fantastic annual event that brings the whole community together.
Under the fun and friendly guise of a Fun Run, this event provides a meaningful space to remember those lost to cancer and to support anyone currently battling the disease. It’s more than just a run – it’s a true community gathering filled with laughter, tears, and connection.
In 2025, the event attracted 417 participants, with breakfast and coffee available, live music, raffles, and a vibrant atmosphere. The opportunity to dress up adds to the fun and sense of togetherness.
The dedication and effort of the Mother’s Day Classic Committee deserve recognition. Their commitment ensures this heartfelt event continues to unite the Esperance community each year in hope, remembrance, and support.
Shire President Ron Chambers congratulated the Award recipients and thanked them for their service
“We are incredibly fortunate in Esperance to be surrounded by people who give so much of themselves. Today we celebrate the everyday people who make our region stronger, recognising volunteers, quiet achievers and community leaders, and honouring contributions that build connection, resilience and local pride.”
Ron continued, “These Awards remind us that strong communities are built by the people who show up, help out and look after one another. Recognising these contributions not only honours the individuals and groups who give so much, but also encourages all of us to play an active role in shaping the kind of community we want to live in.”
Reflecting on today’s celebrations, President Chambers also acknowledged the significance of welcoming new citizens, saying “Esperance is enriched by the diverse cultures, backgrounds and experiences of the people who choose to call our great community and region home. Celebrating our new Australian Citizens alongside our award recipients highlights the strength and inclusiveness of our community.”
Esperance also welcomed Auspire’s 2026 Australia Day Ambassador, Naveed Ahmed, whose story reflects resilience, diversity and the power of community. Drawn to Australia by his love of cricket, Naveed arrived in 2000 with no support network and faced immediate challenges, yet went on to build a successful professional career through determination and the encouragement of everyday Australians.
Having overcome severe childhood stammering and early experiences of bullying, he developed a deep belief in education as a driver of personal and social change. With experience across five continents and qualifications spanning engineering, environmental management, energy economics and project management, Naveed is a strong advocate for inclusion, tolerance and partnerships between business, government and community.
