The Shire has secured funding through the state government’s CCTV Grant Program, with Esperance one of just 35 successful applicants selected from 70 submissions across Western Australia.
The funding will support upgrades to two existing CCTV cameras on Dempster and Andrew Streets, providing clearer, higher-quality imagery to assist Esperance Police in their day-to-day operations. The improvements will also create opportunities to explore the future use of number plate recognition technology, further enhancing community safety capabilities.
The enhanced system will improve police visibility across key traffic routes and public areas, providing valuable information to support investigations and assist in identifying vehicles of interest. High-definition footage will be transmitted directly to Esperance Police, ensuring image quality is maintained and helping provide reliable evidence when required.
The upgraded cameras are expected to be in place in the next six months. As with the Shire’s existing CCTV network, all footage will remain accessible only to Esperance Police.
Receiving this grant reflects the Shire’s ongoing commitment to public safety, which continues to be a priority identified by residents through the Community Scorecard, and is expressed in the Council Plan as Objective 3.1 Improve community safety infrastructure, programs and services.
By working in partnership with local police and securing external funding for these upgrades, the Shire supports a safe and welcoming community through practical, cost-effective initiatives delivering local benefits without placing additional pressure on ratepayers.
