You may notice Shire crews removing astroturf from around the Norfolk Island Pines in the CBD over the coming weeks, and replacing it with mulch. This work follows advice from the Shire’s contracted arborist and is designed to support the long-term health of these significant trees by improving aeration and creating a more permeable root zone in line with the Shire of Esperance Management Plan for the Norfolk Pines. As a tree’s root system generally extends to the edge of its canopy, this treatment will allow greater moisture penetration, aeration and enable roots to function more effectively.
Norfolk Island Pines along the Foreshore will also undergo crown lifting soon. This involves the selective removal of lower branches to encourage upward growth, strengthen tree structure, and support longevity. Crown lifting also improves sightlines and increases clearance for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, contributing to safer and more accessible public spaces.
These measures are part of the Shire’s ongoing commitment to responsible tree management. By investing in the health, safety, and longevity of our public trees – and especially Esperance’s beloved and iconic Norfolk Island Pines, the Shire is helping to preserve the character and amenity of our shared spaces for years to come.
