Bike Tracks Open!

The afternoon of Monday 4 May saw excitement, connection and big air as people young and old gathered for the opening of the Lalor Park Jump Track. Built by Common Ground Trails, who repeatedly tested and sculptured the ramps to achieve perfect jumps, and working with local contractors and Shire staff, the goal was to create a fun but more challenging freestyle experience for older kids, teenagers and adults ready to improve their riding skills. Since the opening the air above the jumps has practically needed traffic control, so we reckon they succeeded!

While the asphalt-finished Jump Track is now open and in constant use during the daylight hours it was designed for, finishing works to complete this fantastic new facility are ongoing. You’ll see bollards installed, soft landscaping such as mulch completed, and options for additional street furniture are under consideration. A gravel carpark will be put in, with opportunities to seal the surface and add connecting footpaths to be explored in future budgets.

Just next door the older part of Lalor Park has also had a refresh. A new playground and other family friendly additions such as a sheltered picnic table are now nestled into the inviting green lawn. This provides a convenient space for parents and carers to sit and watch their young ones on the new climbing net, balance log and other play equipment, while also being able to see kids on the little brother to the Jump Track – the new stabilised gravel pump track. The gravel of this track has been sealed for added durability. It was built by the same team of Shire staff, Common Ground Trails and local contractors as the Jump Track and the design allows a flexible style of riding, being suitable for both pump track riding and small jumps.

There is easy access between the two tracks around the edge of the Park, however as noted previously the Jump Track is not for beginners - and as always, it is up to parents and carers to keep an eye on their young ones, making sure they’re not attempting activities beyond their ability.

All up, these upgrades have turned Lalor Park into a lively, family-friendly space with something for everyone - whether you’re keen for the bike experiences, bringing kids to the playground for the afternoon, or just to catch up with a friend. As a designated Neighbourhood Open Space in the 2025–2035 Playgrounds and Public Open Space Strategic Plan, the Park is set to play an important role as a local hub for recreation, social connection and community life.

The new amenities also support Objective 2.2 of the Council Plan, to increase participation in sport and recreation activities, while adding to Esperance’s growing network of riding options. Beginner-friendly bike and pump tracks are already available in the townsite, as well as the easy family circuit at the Piggery Mountain Bike Track 13km north of town. With beginner tracks around town and more advanced trails further out, the Jump Track offers the perfect next step for riders building their confidence and skills.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, now’s a great time to head down and see what all the buzz is about.
