If you’ve strolled past the Greater Sports Ground lately, you may have noticed a bit more movement than usual, earth being shifted, grass changing colour, fencing quietly appearing. These early signs mark the beginning of a long‑awaited transformation: the development of Esperance’s new synthetic hockey field.
This project that’s been years in the making and shaped by community voices through the Greater Sports Ground Redevelopment Masterplan. Now, those ideas are moving from planning pages into reality.
What’s Happening On Site
Behind the scenes, groundwork is underway to prepare the space around the Multi Sports Oval. Current early works include:
- Reticulation adjustments
- Earthworks to reshape the landscape
- Relocating the existing cricket pitch
These steps are paving the way for a new synthetic hockey pitch being constructed by the Esperance Hockey Association.
Other GSG Improvements
To support the new synthetic hockey pitch and improve the overall precinct layout, additional works are being completed:
- Cricket pitch relocation further south – In progress
- A new public car park alongside the synthetic hockey pitch - commencing soon
- Stockpiling of the topsoil at the GSG for use on the 3rd Soccer Pitch – commencing soon
- A small extension of the Multi Sports Oval – Planned
As work progresses, visitors may notice some temporary changes: areas fenced off, paths detoured, or patches of grass looking a little worse for wear. These short-term disruptions ensure the site stays safe and ready for the next stages of development.
The Synthetic Hockey Field Development is just one chapter in the broader story of the GSG’s revitalisation. To explore the full scope of current and future projects, visit the project overview page on the Shire’s website here.
As work begins, the Shire extends its thanks to the sporting associations, volunteers and workers whose support keeps these projects moving forward. Together, we’re building sporting spaces the whole of Esperance can be proud of.
