    Preventing Litter

After collection, please check your verge and remove any small leftover debris to help keep our community safe and protect the environment, as the pieces could be washed into local waterways or harm animals.
All uncollected items must be removed after Friday 19 June 2026.
Items left on the verge after this date may be considered littering or illegal dumping and may incur penalties.

    Notice to Residents

The Shire will be transitioning to the Myrup Waste Facility shortly, which may result in changes to how verge-side collection is delivered due to operational requirements.

We appreciate your understanding as we continue to improve waste services and outcomes for the community.

What are my options as a rural landowner who is not eligible for a Bulk Bin collection?

If you get permission from a friend or relative in town, you could leave your waste on their verge.

Bring your items to the Wylie Bay Waste Facility. Many of the accepted items in the verge collection are free to deliver or a voucher entry can be utilised. Every ratepayer receives 4 waste vouchers per year.

Can I book the Bulk Bin collection even if I have a verge collection?

No, the Bulk Bin option is only for residential blocks outside the verge side collection area and within 25kms of Esperance Post Office.

Will you pick up washing machines and clothes dryers?

Yes, these are part of the whitegoods collection and are recycled as scrap steel. For safety, all doors should be removed prior to placing them on the verge.

Will you pick up fridges and old air conditioners? What happens to the gas in them?

Yes, fridges and air conditioners will be degassed when they arrive at the Wylie Bay Waste Facility by licensed staff members. The refrigerant is recovered and recycled in an environmentally responsible manner. All fridge doors should be removed before placing them on the verge for safety.

Please note fridges and air conditioners are not accepted in the Bulk Bin collection for rural areas outside of the Verge Side Collection areas.

Will you pick up green waste/garden waste, i.e. trees?

No, green waste and garden waste WILL NOT be accepted.

These can be delivered to the Wylie Bay Waste Facility free of charge and will be mulched on-site.

    What happens to items collected?

The Shire aims to keep as many items out of landfill as possible. Multiple trucks will come by to separately collect steel, whitegoods, E-waste and other recyclable items and recycle where possible. Other waste that can’t be recycled will be collected in a waste truck and disposed of at landfill.

What if things are too good for Verge Side pick-up?

Consider giving your unwanted items a new home by donating to charity e.g. Red Cross, Anglican OpShop and Esperance Care Services. Or include these items as part of the Garage Sale Trail, held every year over 2 weekends in November. Register HERE and find out how to host your own epic Garage Sale!

What if unacceptable items are put on the verge?

Items set out for collection that do not comply with collection guidelines will not be collected. It is the resident's responsibility to remove any remaining waste.

Remember that littering or illegal dumping penalties may apply if waste is left on verges after 19 June 2026 or if you fail to comply with collection guidelines.

Please review the list of accepted and non-acceptable items and how to set them out on the verge.

What happens if my items are not sorted?

It is the tenant's responsibility to keep your piles of Verge Side items tidy and sorted when collection begins. If not, the collection trucks may not be able to pick up your Verge Side waste.

A truck passed my property but did not collect my items. Should I report a missed service?

No. Different trucks collect different types of materials and follow separate routes. It is normal for one truck to pass without collecting your item, Eg An E-waste truck is picking up TV's and computers a different ruck will pick up a mattress later.  If your waste was placed on the verge before 2 June, it will be collected as part of the scheduled service, there is no need to report it as a missed collection at this stage.

My verge-side items were not collected on 2 June. What should I do?

Verge side collection is carried out by multiple trucks on different routes and days. Even if your items were not collected on 2 June, they may still be scheduled for collection shortly after.

Please ensure your items were placed on the verge before 2 June. Items placed out after this date may be missed, and any uncollected materials may be considered illegal dumping and subject to penalties.
