The Esperance Museum is excited to announce the launch of the eBook "From the Bay to the Battlefields." This engaging publication recounts the stories of Esperance's brave servicemen who served in the First World War. The eBook will be available for viewing or download on the Esperance Museum website starting April 25, in honour of ANZAC Day.

Local volunteer historian Kathy Hine has dedicated over a decade to conducting extensive archival research and collecting personal stories from families, ensuring that every detail of these heroes' lives is preserved. The Esperance Museum has supported these efforts by providing access to community archives, research assistance, and guidance throughout the project.

Research involved identifying names on the Honor Board at the Esperance RSL and utilising service records from the National Archives of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, and various national and local archives. Families of the servicemen contributed invaluable photos and stories passed down through generations.

But the stories aren’t complete. To further enrich these histories and provide complete details for those servicemen with limited information, Community members are encouraged to share additional stories and images. Your participation can significantly enhance our collective understanding and honour the memories of these brave individuals.

The Shire has proudly supported local historians through community grants and assistance from the Museum in preserving these invaluable stories for future generations.

"From the Bay to the Battlefields" explores the connections between servicemen and their families through shared locations, family ties, and common experiences in the area.

Cultural Officer Lynda Horn recommended this digital format to ensure that everyone can access these important stories. If there is sufficient interest, the Museum may consider producing a printed version later this year. Research notes have been generously contributed to the Museum's community archives, allowing future historians to build upon this work.

Visit the Esperance Museum website on ANZAC Day to access "From the Bay to the Battlefields" and learn more about the local heroes who served in the First World War.
