The Shire of Esperance has received a formal application regarding a privately owned block south of Condingup. The application seeks amendment of the Local Planning Strategy to include a range of tourism, rural residential, Rural Smallholding, Rural, and Conservation areas on the property in question.
Under state government legislation, every local government must have a Local Planning Strategy (the Strategy) to guide planning and development of land use and population growth, while balancing the needs and expectations of business and community for economic and social development.
The Council has been briefed on this application and has agreed to proceed with the next step.
Next Steps:
On April 22, 2025, Council referred the amendment to the Western Australia Planning Commission (WAPC) for review and consent to advertise. This review process can take up to six months.
If Supported by WAPC:
- The Shire will open the amendment for public comment through:
If Not Supported by WAPC:
- Shire will inform the community that the governing state body did not support the amendment.
- There will be no changes to the Local Planning Strategy.
The Strategy is the guiding document for planning in the Shire of Esperance and is not frequently changed. The last successful amendment was in 2015.
We want to reassure our community that there is an in-depth legislative and legal process for any changes to the Strategy. The Shire is committed to transparency on when official and community comments can be submitted and the outcomes of any decisions. Your input is valuable, and we will keep you informed every step of the way.
