The Shire of Esperance recently welcomed the Minister for the Goldfields-Esperance Region, Hon David Michael MLA, to discuss key priorities and opportunities for the local community. Shire President Ron Chambers and CEO Shane Burge extended the invitation as part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to strong advocacy and regional development.

During the visit, the Shire highlighted several critical projects and areas requiring State Government support, including:

  • James Street Precinct
  • Workers Accommodation Project
  • Land Subdivision and Development – particularly in relation to Development WA’s extensive landholdings around Esperance
  • Esperance Senior High School Upgrade
  • Esperance Airport Runway Upgrade
  • Road Infrastructure Improvements

A key focus of the meeting was the Workers Accommodation Project, for which the Shire presented a shovel-ready, detailed project plan. With Esperance and many regional areas facing a housing crisis, the need for dedicated, affordable accommodation for essential workers has become urgent. The project aims to support local businesses, attract skilled workers, and ease pressure on the broader housing market. The Shire has committed $2.3 million and is actively seeking external funding to bring this project to life.

These advocacy efforts reflect the Council’s role in representing community needs and ensuring local priorities are heard at all levels of government.

This work aligns with the Council Plan, particularly:

  • 1 – Provide transparent, accountable, and effective leadership.
  • 1.3 – Facilitate greater housing availability, including engagement with the State on housing management.
  • 1.4 – Construct worker accommodation, subject to external funding.

The Shire will continue to work closely with State Government representatives to progress these priorities and deliver outcomes that support the region’s growth, liveability, and resilience.
