On Sunday, 18 May, volunteers from local Bush Fire Brigades and staff from the Shire of Esperance completed a 9-hectare hazard reduction burn in the southern part of Toowacka Reserve.
A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who gave up their Sunday afternoon to support this important work, and to the local community for your patience and support.
This prescribed burn significantly reduced fuel loads in the area to around 5–7 tonnes per hectare. It also created a low-fuel buffer zone designed to help slow the spread of potential bushfires, offering added protection to nearby communities, including Pink Lake and Monjingup.
Let It Grow
During the operation, a small hop-over into Pink Lake Reserve was quickly brought under control. Firebreaks used to contain the burn will now be rehabilitated, and bollards will be installed to prevent vehicle damage and help reduce the spread of dieback in the area. Please do not disturb the area, including walking and biking through burnt areas.
What’s Next
This burn is part of the Shire’s 2025 Hazard Reduction Program, aligned with the Bushfire Risk Management Plan and supported by the Mitigation Activity Funding Program.
Upcoming burns will include Skroly Park Cell 1, Quagy Beach, Borefields Cell 1b, Skroly Park Cell 2 and Toowacka North. The program will continue over the coming months, and dates for these burns will depend on weather conditions and resource availability.
Stay Informed
Details of upcoming burns will be shared on the Shire’s website and social media channels.
Stay tuned, stay informed, and thank you for being part of a safer, more resilient Esperance.
