ANZAC Day: Voices of Women in Service

Listen to a Local

The community are warmly invited to the Esperance Library for a special Listen to a Local session at 1.00pm on Friday 17 April, when three of our own local legends will share their stories as part of the 2026 ANZAC theme: Women in Service.

This year’s theme shines a light on the important and often under‑recognised role women have played in Australia’s military history, both past and present. From combat support and medical roles to administrative and peacekeeping service, it invites reflection on the many ways women have served and the lasting impact of their contributions.

Local women Midge, Nona and Margaret will speak about their experiences serving in the Royal Australian Air Force and the Navy, what inspired them to enlist, and how their time in service has continued to shape their lives.

Margaret’s story will feature in an upcoming book on women in service by journalist and photographer Carla Edwards. This will be a unique contribution as the only story in the book involving a mother and daughter, as Margaret’s own mother also served in the Navy during World War II. Meanwhile, Midge and Nona were in Perth last month to take part in celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force, honouring the service of women in the Air Force since 1951. All three women remain deeply connected to the Esperance community and continue to give back through a range of volunteering roles.

All are welcome to join us for this engaging hour of conversation, remarkable local stories, and afternoon tea afterwards!
