The Shire of Esperance has been successful in securing $10,000 toward the Esperance Foreshore Beach Accessibility Project.
The funding will help provide a SandRider Beach Wheelchair, approx. 60mt of beach matting from the beach access ramps near the Whale Tail to the water as well as a purpose built shed to permanently house the wheelchair.
The Shire consulted the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan Reference Group on the Foreshore Beach Accessibility Project. During these meetings, a beach wheelchair and matting at this location was one of the recommendations that came back from the Reference Group. We are pleased that this recommendation can be actioned so quickly.
The Town Beach and Foreshore, along with the all abilities playground, has been designed as an inclusive environment. Accessibility to the beach and swimming pontoon will further enhanced the area for all. The equipment has been ordered and it is anticipated that the area will be fully functional by the end of March 2022.
The public can also hire a beach wheelchair to help access other beaches within the shire. Bookings can be done by calling the Shire on 9071 0677.
The Esperance Foreshore Beach Accessibility Project forms part of the James Street Beach Enclosure and Swimming Pontoon Project, and is partly funded by the Department of Communities - All-terrain Wheelchair Access for National Parks and Beaches Grant.
