The recent capping project carried out at Wylie Bay Waste Facility is now complete. The project was to seal Phase 1 of the landfill. A Geosynthetic Clay Liner was laid, and was capped with 1.2m of sand. This was then topped with hydromulch which contains seedlings native to the local area to promote regrowth.
The Shire was quoted over $3 million for the project which was over the $2.25 million budget. The project was managed in-house and most of the work was carried out by local contractors and staff, with specialists coming in for necessary tasks. This means the total cost for the project came in at $1.93 million, and under budget! This type of work occurs at most landfills with a closure management plan and is required by the Department of Water and Environment Regulation.
