Local Government Week
Last week a small group of Councillors from the Shire of Esperance attended the annual WALGA local government week convention. What an inspiring and informative week it was! We heard from guest speakers and had the opportunity to share ideas with Councillors from other Local Governments.
We took the opportunity to visit the Banksia Rd Composting facility in Bunbury. It provides a weekly organics collection service for residents, significantly reducing what goes into landfill. The waste is treated with aeration and heat to kill bacteria and seeds and an organically certified compost is produced and resold to ratepayers and businesses in the region. This plant is ranked in the top 3 in the state and I look forward to further conversations with them to see how we can do something similar in Esperance.
Some of the speakers talked about tools to help our local businesses and assist local entrepreneurs and gave us insight into what technologies will be coming our way in the near future, and how this will impact our community.
It was also fantastic to see the Esperance banner flying proudly for Banners in the Terrace. While the design did not win this year, it was a beautiful symbol of our town.
