Esperance’s Lake Monjingup Reserve will be closed for some time, following a large fire that burned through the area on January 23.

Shire President Malcolm Heasman said the fire was a terrible blow to the community and the locals who had dedicated their time to developing the reserve.

"Lake Monjingup was a beautiful place to enjoy Esperance’s natural landscape. Whether it was for a picnic, a stroll by the lake, to go bird watching, play with the giant chess board or in the maze, the reserve provided hours of fun to many people. It is very sad to see this area devastated by fire and especially sad when you consider the amount of work that was put into developing the area by the Lake Monjingup Community Development Committee, Shire of Esperance Parks and Gardens staff and the Work for the Dole participants."

The fire has caused substantial damage to infrastructure within the reserve, and the vegetation surrounding it. Rehabilitation will take years. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is under investigation.

Infrastructure that has been destroyed includes the boardwalk, environmental information centre and toilets. The RSL grove sustained major damage while the pet cemetery and maze were more fortunate and sustained minor damage.

Cr Heasman said the reserve will remain closed for a while.

"We need to keep Lake Monjingup Reserve closed for some time in order to assess the damage. The Lake Monjingup Community Development Committee and Council will need to work together to determine the way forward. Some initial maintenance work will need to be completed and a recovery plan devised to establish the regeneration of the reserve. Volunteering opportunities will be available for the community to contribute to Lake Monjingup’s recovery in the coming months."

"On behalf of council, and the wider community, I’d like to thank those who worked hard to bring the fire under control. Their dedication and commitment to keeping our community safe is inspiring."
