Virgin Australia has proposed to amend its flight schedule on the regulated Perth-Esperance route.  The changes would result in a service reduction from three flights per day to two, on weekdays.  Subject to Ministerial approval the proposed schedule would come in to effect on November 11, 2014.

An opportunity for public comment is currently available. Submissions should be made in writing to the CEO, Shire of Esperance, PO Box 507, Windich Street, Esperance WA 6450 or shire@esperance.wa.gov.au. Submissions must be received before 5pm on Monday, September 1, 2014.

Under the deed of agreement, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA) is required to fly a minimum of 16 direct services per week to Esperance, with an additional two indirect services operating Perth-Ravensthorpe-Esperance. VARA also operates a direct Perth-Ravensthorpe flight on a Friday. The proposed service would see the number of direct services to Esperance reduce to 11 services per week and the removal of the direct Friday Perth-Ravensthorpe flight. VARA would retain the two indirect flights between Perth-Ravensthorpe-Esperance.

The effect of the proposed timetable changes on the frequency of services to each town can be summarised as:

The terms of the deed require VARA to seek approval from the Minister for Transport where the level of service drops below the minimum specified in the deed. Once a formal request to change a timetable is received, DoT manages the process and seeks feedback from members of the local Community Consultation Group. This feedback is provided to the Minister before a decision on the flight timetable is made.
