The first of two solar-powered compacting bins being trialled in Esperance has been installed at the town boat ramp car park. The Big Belly Solar bin contains a compacting system that enables rubbish to be compacted at the point of collection. The system needs only eight hours of sunlight a month to operate and provides increased capacity meaning collections can be completed less frequently.

If the trials are successful about a dozen of the bins will be installed on the waterfront, in a durable finish appropriate for the marine environment. They will also have an SMS capability to inform the operator when the bin is at 85 per cent capacity and will soon need emptying.

The second trial bin will soon be installed on Post Office Square.
