Background Information

Why Recycling Began

The Shire of Esperance conducted an ‘Essence of Esperance’ survey in February 2000. It was an ambitious project to identify a Community Vision that would be used as the basis for the development of Council’s priorities for the short and long term.

The results of the Community survey showed that the lack of recycling (along with the cost of travel) was the thing that people disliked most about living in Esperance. Response of 61%.

Commencement of Recycling

A trial recycling service was conducted from September, 2001 and ended 20th November, 2001.

A full kerb side residential recycling service began 21st November, 2001.

Commercial recycling was introduced in May 2003.
