What is a SuperTown?
The official definition of a SuperTown is "a selected community that has been chosen to play a critical role in absorbing some of the State’s predicted population growth". WA’s population is set to double by 2050 to 4.5million.
So from a State government’s point of view it’s an initiative to disperse the population through the southern half of WA. The SuperTowns Framework booklet provides an overview on the SuperTowns concept and what it means to the towns that have been selected.
A SuperTowns Project Team was created to facilitate the implementation of the SuperTowns programme in Esperance, including the development of a Growth Plan and Investment Blueprint that satifies the Framework principles as outlined by the Regional Development Plan. The Project Team includes:
Shire President and Deputy Shire President
Shire of Esperance Chief Executive Officer
Goldfields Esperance Development Commission Chief Executive Officer and Manager Southern Region
Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and Chief Executive Officer
Office of the Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, Member for Mining and Pastoral
Office of Dr Graham Jacobs MLA, Member for Eyre
Chair of the Community Reference Group
Department of Regional Development and Lands
What does it mean for Esperance?
The exciting part about being a SuperTown is that the Esperance community developed a growth and implementation plan which provides a road map on how we want the town and surrounding region to grow and look like in 20 - 30 years.
So in essence SuperTowns is a community planning process on how we want the town to grow.
