Council Committees

Council Committees

Under the powers of the Local Government Act 1995, Council has the power to establish committees of three or more persons to assist the Council and to exercise the powers and discharge the duties of the local government that can be delegated to committees.

The Council of the Shire of Esperance has previously established both standing and advisory committees, with the former reporting directly to Council, and advisory committees reporting to the relevant standing committee. In addition, there are also a number of external, non-Council committees with Council representation.

Ordinary Council Meetings

The Council meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month, with the exception of December where the meeting is held a week earlier. Recommendations from the standing committee meetings in the week prior to the full council meeting are considered and adopted as appropriate. Click HERE to see the meeting timetable for 2012.

Ordinary council meetings are held in the Council Chambers, commencing at 7pm and are open to all residents. During Public Question Time, which begins at the start of the meeting and the conclusion of the meeting, any questions or queries can be raised and answered by the Shire President.

Standing Committees

Standing Committee meetings are also open to the public and any person wishing to address the Committee on any matter on the agenda may do so by attending the relevant committee at the advertised commencement time.

A community group or individual wishing to have a matter brought before Council should contact the Chief Executive Officer two weeks prior to the standing committee meetings, as Agendas for the Standing Committees close on the second Monday of the month, one week prior to the meeting.

There are two Standing Committess, the All Purpose Committee which meets every third Tuesday of the month, with the exeption of December when the meetings are held one week earlier; and the Audit Committee which meets as required, generally on the third Tuesday of the month, following the All Purpose Committee.

The document attached HERE summarises all Council Committees, and also provides an overview of the Committees’ terms of reference and their membership.
